Signing In Procedure

.....................................................................................................................................................................................

Dear Parents…

Students who are arriving late must be signed in by a parent or adult. If students sign themselves in, it is considered as an unexcused absence. Also, cafeteria doors are locked at 8:30 every morning; students must go to the front office to sign in and to receive a pass to class. Again, parent must sign in. Thank you for your cooperation.

BROAD AWARD FINALIST: CUMBERLAND COUNTY SCHOOLS’ STRENGTHS IN NATIONAL SPOTLIGHT
Published by Nathan Stanley on April 30, 2013
.....................................................................................................................................................................................

The Broad Foundation recently announced that the Cumberland County School system is one of four finalists for the 2013 Broad Prize for Urban Education.  The $1 million dollar prize is the largest educational prize in the country given to a single school district and honors a district that demonstrates the greatest overall performance and improvement in student achievement while reducing achievement gaps among ethnics groups and between social economic groups. It shines the spotlight on the hard work of everyone involved in delivering student gains and works to spread best practices from city to city so that other districts may learn from the Cumberland County Schools.

We have focused on our True North philosophy of being “Committed to Growth for Every Child.”  School districts cannot apply or be nominated.  We were selected by a review panel of 17 prominent educational researchers, policy leaders, practitioners and executives from leading universities, educational associations, civil rights advocacy organizations, think tanks and foundations.  A leading national research consulting firm reviewed publicly available academic achievement data.  Based on the review, we were selected as a finalist.

Broad Award Finalist: Cumberland County Schools' Strengths In National Spotlight

The data shows why we were selected.  Approximately 92 percent of our schools achieved at least expected growth with 67 percent of our schools achieving high growth.  In fact, as a system, our overall results were in the high-growth range. With the exception of one test in one grade level, we made at least expected growth on every End-of- Course and End-of Grade test administered by the state. The county and all our high schools exceeded 80 percent and surpassed the state average.

The Broad Prize follows recognition by AdvancED during its recent accreditation visit.  The AdvancED Review Team recommended full accreditation for every school.  After visiting 16 schools and conducting 837 interviews, they came to the same conclusion that there are significant practices occurring in Cumberland County schools that need to be replicated in other districts.  The Broad Foundation Prize will allow this to happen as it signs the brightest spotlight on the gains of our district.

A team of five researchers will be visiting our schools in the next few weeks.  We have submitted evidence in 73 different categories for review.  I am pleased to say that we have the documentation for the visit and it shows thoroughness of our reform.

It was stated in one of the documents that “being a finalist for this highly regarded prize is the equivalent to winning the Nobel Prize.”  No prize is considered more prestigious by public school educators and to be a finalist is an honor.

It, once again, points to the hard work of the staff of the Cumberland County Schools and their “commitment to growth for every child.”
